The Worst Best Man | A Steamy Romance with a WOC Protagonist
3/5 stars
As a wedding planner, Lina Santos found herself in a position she never thought would happen to her. Left on her wedding day. Two years later, she’s given the opportunity of a lifetime — to be a wedding planner for an exclusive, 5-star hotel cooperation. The catch? She would have to collaborate with her ex-fiance’s brother, AKA the best man who broke the news that she wouldn’t be getting married. Lina despises Max, but the two are forced to work together and begin to realize they make a pretty good team.
This started out strong for me and then lost momentum around the 70% mark. I appreciated Lina and the representation she offered. I could relate to her on multiple levels and enjoyed reading about a main character that was a woman of color.
The romance aspect was going well in the first half. I got over the fact that Lina was interested in her ex’s brother pretty quickly and the tension leading up to their relationship was great. I thought it lost depth as soon as they got together. There were steamy scenes that did aid in their relationship development some, but also felt a bit forced and in the way of the way of the emotional growth I was seeing early.
Overall, it was an interesting concept for a romance that had a few tropes and offers representation to women of color.
