A Conjuring of Light
The imbalance between the different Londons has reached a peak. An ancient enemy threatens the universe and our beloved characters must learn to hone their skills, confront their weakness, and work as a team to defeat it. This enemy is strong and nothing like they have seen before. In the final chapter of the Shades of Magic trilogy, Kell, Lila, Alucard, and Holland are put to the test as they try and save the world.
I picked up A Conjuring of Light immediately after finishing A Gathering of Shadows. It took me much longer to read this final book relative to the other two. This was partially due to having other obligations, but also because I wasn’t drawn into this book as much as the second. While I consider book 2 a comfort read, the last installment has a much darker tone that didn’t have me flipping the pages as quickly. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the plot development and the story was nicely paced; however, it was the last 20% that had me unable to put it down and finally out of a reading slump.
I think the characters are this trilogy’s strong point. I can’t help falling in love with them (yes, I even have compassion for Holland). Each had a satisfying arc, and I really enjoyed seeing how they needed to overcome their differences and work as a team to reach their end goal. Despite not loving this book as much as its predecessors, I am still really satisfied with the story. I didn’t think there were any loose ends or glaring plot holes. It was a perfect end to a thrilling trilogy.
