Gallant

Olivia Prior only has her mother’s journal to have any idea of her family history. Her mother’s writing shows a descent into madness that Olivia isn’t quite sure what to make of. The only she knows is that her mother never wants her to return to their family home, Gallant. One day, Olivia receives a letter from her uncle calling her home. She has no choice but to go to Gallant, and there she discovers exactly what has been haunting her home.

I really loved Gallant, but I already know this is not going to be for everyone. This was a fantasy, paranormal, coming-of-age story that was high on the suspense and tension but lacked a bit when it came to the plot. There was definitely an eerie vibe to the book, but when I finished and looked back on the plot, not many events took place. This was fine with me, as I was really immersed in the story and connected with the characters, but for readers looking for a plot-driven book, this might not be the one. 

I really connected with Olivia as an adoptee (a theme I find in all of VE Schwab’s books). I am always pleasantly surprised by how accurately my complex emotions about family and loss are portrayed on the page and often wonder if VE Schwab is in the adoption community because this representation is not typical in other books I read. 

While this book was more suspenseful than thrilling, I could not stop turning the pages. Schwab’s descriptions of the house, ghouls, and characters made me drawn into this paranormal story instantly. The last 15% really picked up and then I just didn’t put it down until I really finished the novel. It was a quick enough read that I could have devoured it in one sitting if I wanted. Instead, I slowed down to savor the story and stay immersed in Gallant for as long as I could. 

This was the first paranormal coming-of-age story I had read, but I really enjoyed it and it reminded me exactly why VE Schwab is a go-to author for me.
