Identical
I’m not even sure where to begin with this one.
It’s a disturbing read, but I found myself slowing down because I had predicted the ending. Maybe I read too many psychological thrillers.
It was hard for me to get used to the style of writing. Typically, I am not a huge fan of free-form poetry. This didn’t convince me to start reading a bunch. For the plot twist (again, I predicted it), I can see how this style works, it just wasn’t working for me.
The content matter made me uncomfortable, which I guess was the point. I just find it hard to read about trauma and mental health because I never know how informed the authors are. In a society where those topics are stigmatized, my first question is always whether the story perpetuates the stigma.
If reading verse is your thing and you like dark topics, then this book is going to be for you. Of course, you may have read so much that you’ll be like me and predict the plot twist.
I think what would be interesting is rereading it knowing my suspicions were confirmed to look for clues and things I missed the first time. Overall, it is a great idea, but not my favorite.
