This was my August pick for the Book of the Month Club (my very first box!).

Ruth Ware has done it again. While, this didn’t scare me as much as some of her previous works (The Lying Game was super creepy), it was still suspenseful and thrilling. I read it in one sitting and could not put it down. Maybe I didn’t find it as scary because I read it during the day.

Rowan Caine write to a lawyer from prison as she aways her murder trial. As a nanny, she experiences things in the home that can only be described as paranormal. It is an interesting style because you know she has been accused and arrested, so you try to figure out if she is a reliable narrator… and if so, who the actual killer is.

I was only able to guess one of the plot twists, and it was so well done that I still enjoyed the ending. Ware had me questioning every character up until the very end. There were some reveals that had me flipping back to make sure I read correctly. That is one thing I can always count on with Ware’s books. I think I have it figured out, but it turns out the story is so much more involved than I originally thought.

If you want a suspenseful, creepy book then look no further. Ware has become my go-to for the paranormal and scary. I have always been a fan and this book definitely holds up.
