The First Mistake
4/5 stars
This was a good book, but overall I felt uninspired by the book after reaching the ending. I lost sleep reading this in one sitting. It was fast paced and intriguing. There were multiple plot twists and while I sort of guessed a reveal, there were more twists that added another level to the entire story. Not all of it was 100% believable for me, but it was still okay.
What disappointed me (without giving away the ending) was the lack of character development. I had expected much more after the big reveals and was left disappointed in the protagonist’s choices. The story was wrapped up quickly and there was not much in the way of describing motivation and reactions. Is it possible to really enjoy a book and then lose some interest at the end? If so, that’s me. It’s still good, I just wanted more.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I’m not sure if I like this or Jones’ first novel, The Other Woman, better. While not scary, this is a good thriller and an easy read for a relaxing day.
