The Whisper Man

I know. Another 5/5 review. I promise I am not an easy reviewer! I just research books beforehand and trust people who have similar tastes as I do!

“If you leave a door half open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken.” 

This was a thrilling ride that I can only describe as being like a Criminal Minds episode interlaced with an exploration of complex father-son relationships. This book offered a really creepy story without much graphic content. I made the mistake of reading at night in a mostly dark room and then eventually fell asleep wondering if I’d be hearing any whispers. 

I did predict who the killer was. It wasn’t hard to figure out. I don’t think it was meant to be. It was a suspenseful narrative of catching a killer and even when you know who it is, you still are unsure of what is about to happen. 

North’s characters came to life and had me sympathizing with most as they worked through years of resentment and forgiveness. The Whisper Man does not make much of an appearance, but he was so creepy and his actions so vile, his presence was always looming in the background. 

This isn’t a horror book that aims to have you terrified, so if that’s what you are looking for, look elsewhere. Instead, this offers a bit more character development and delves into family relationships while maintaining a feeling of vulnerability when there is a killer on the loose.
