The Last Time I Saw You
3/5 stars
** spoiler alert **
Dr. Kate English has an adoring husband and adorable daughter. As the heiress to a large fortune, it doesn’t seem like her life could be any better. That all changes when her mother is murdered and the killer begins targeting Kate. To cope, Kate contacts her estranged best friend, Blaire. Blaire immediately comes running to the rescue, even taking the investigation into her own hands. Little does Kate know she is about to unveil some old secrets and not know who to trust.
This was a thriller that kept my heart racing. I sympathized with Kate as the killer kept taunting and gaslighting. Whenever she would receive a new text or “gift”, I was right there with her questioning if this would be the last day she saw alive. I was guessing who the killer was the entire time and when the final reveal happened, I had not expected it.
I did, however, expect another plot twist and unfortunately, that’s where things went sour for me.
Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD.
It was revealed that Blaire is actually the biological daughter of Kate’s mother who was given up for adoption. She was vengeful because she was robbed of the love and life she could have had with Kate’s family. As an adopted person, I am tired of witnessing this trope. With studies on how being separated from one’s mother affects mental health, this trope continues to feel insensitive and an easy way to explain someone’s toxic behavior. The one saving passage was reading about how because Blaire did not have the luxury of really knowing anyone biologically related to her, becoming a mother was important to her.
Lastly, it was revealed the killer and the person taunting Kate are not the same. I won’t share any more spoilers, but this was bit too unrealistic for me. Overall this was a good thriller and I was excited to read it after reading The Last Mrs. Parrish. Unfortunately, the resolution brought this down a few stars.
