The Wife Upstairs | A Jane Eyre Retelling That Fell Short
3/5 stars
Jane has her own secrets, but when she meets Eddie Rochester, a recently widowed man in the upscale neighborhood she walks dogs in, she hones in on her target and is determined to create a new and better life for herself. Little does she know Eddie has his own secrets and his deceased wife just might be making an appearance sooner than Jane thought.
I began reading this not knowing it was a retelling of Jane Eyre until I researched about halfway through. I was expected a thriller because that was how this book was marketed as. There was definitely some suspense, but overall the tone felt light and more of a romance between two people who aren’t entirely truthful about their pasts.
Once the plot twists started coming and the suspense picked up, the book was almost finished. I felt that the reveals were underwhelming and left unfinished. It was an interesting book, but ultimately didn’t have the momentum to be a solid thriller for me.
