Night on Sixth | A Comedic Glimpse at Figuring Out Life with Unexpected Friends

Yola is engaged to be married and realizing that she would like a few more life experiences. In an out-of-character move, she ghosts her friends during her own engagement party and instead spends the night with some strangers she meets on Sixth Street.

Still from Night on Sixth

As a young woman engaged to be married, I found myself relating to Yola a lot. I could echo some of her sentiments and I, like many, often question if we are making the right choices, if we have enough life experience to even make these decisions if there is something out there we are missing. These concerns are what prompted Yola’s own night on Sixth.

The movie seemed more like a documentary which gave it a more authentic feel. The emotions were raw and the shooting style made me feel like I was accompanying Yola along on her journey. I found her interactions with her new friends to be a bit comical (e.g. their quest for drugs) and I enjoyed Yola’s urgency to do things out of her comfort zone.

The people she meets are interesting in their own ways and I honestly wished the film could have been longer so we could learn more about them. At running just over an hour, I would have liked to see more development and resolution about Yola’s journey. At the same time, I do appreciate that this wasn’t exactly a fairy-tale ending. It would be unrealistic to have one night out and suddenly feel completely at ease about all of your life decisions. This film was raw and authentic, and the ending stayed true to that.
