The Wangs Vs. The World | Too Slow-Paced To Be Comedic For Me
2.75/5 stars
Charles Wang earned his large fortune by building a cosmetics empore. A financial crisis takes everything he has. He gathers his family and heads cross-country to his eldest daughter’s upstate New York home.
Not what I was expected and not sure it’s really for me… I wanted it to be like Crazy Rich Asians meets Schitt’s Creek. Most of the book follows the Wangs on their road trip to the eldest daughter, Saina. They slowly face their reality and become slightly more in touch with the world.
I just found the pacing to be too slow for me. It was hard to get (and stay) interested. Parts of the book were comedic, but I think a lot of the humor was lost on me. I think it has a lot of potential, but I didn’t feel connected enough to any of the characters. They were unrelatable and lacking development. I likely needed this story to be over-the-top and a bit more satirical to find it funny. Instead, this was just a slow-paced read about a rich family that loses everything.
