The Soulmate Equation
3.5/5
Love is not something that can be quantified. Unless it can… Jess is a single mother who doesn’t have much time to devote to herself. Her focus is her daughter and definitely not dating. When she happens to meet a brooding regular, River, at her local coffee shop, she learns of his startup app. A dating app that uses genetics to match people. Jess is skeptical, but after she matches with River, even she can’t deny her attraction. Maybe it is possible to predict love.
As a scientist, I enjoyed the concept of this contemporary romance (as I like most of the books by these authors). It was a unique twist to the enemies-to-lovers/fake dating tropes. I was hoping for a bit more from this novel. I had a hard time connecting with Jess and found her to be frustrating at times. The romantic and sexual tension between her and River could have been developed more. A lot was packed into this book and the plot moved quickly, but that resulted in not enough build up.
I think if there was more focus on Jess and River’s relationship, I would have enjoyed the story more. I did appreciate the side characters, but there were a lot of dynamics to keep up with. They did aid Jess’s character development but were not 100% necessary.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read with surprising depth. It just lacked the tension I typically enjoy in contemporary romances.
