亲爱的妈妈,
Are you doing well? What has the pandemic been like in China? I thought of you often during lockdown. I hoped you and our family were staying safe and healthy. When the anti-Asian racism increased here, I wondered what you’d think about it. Do you know I am here? Do you know I’ve been enduring the hate and standing up against ignorance?
妈妈,I was even a part of a Stop Asian Hate PSA. I think you would have liked it. I haven’t seen the finished product yet, but several Asian members of my community came together to share our stories. I shared about not knowing you, not knowing my roots, and reclaiming my identity.
妈妈,I took my bridal photos last week. I had a dress and hair piece sent from China. It triggered a lot of intense emotions. My hair stylist pinned my head piece into my hair, but I wish you were there to help. Mom helped too. I imagined both of you looking at me, inspecting the hair and makeup, and making sure everything was in place.
妈妈, I used to write often but it’s been a while. I want to start again. It can be really painful sometimes, but I want you to know how I am doing and where I am. I hope to see you soon, but until then, I’ll keep updating you with letters!
你的女儿,
飞
