The Club
2.5/5
Home is so exclusive even A-list celebrities fight for membership. The top-tier clubs around the world offer a safe haven for the elite to get away from the world. Island Home is the latest, most exclusive addition to the Home franchises and opening weekend proves to be more deadly than anticipated.
I grabbed this book after seeing hype– likely from Reece Witherspoon’s book club. I’ve had mixed results with her recommendations but decided to take a chance on this one. The Club started out really strong. I was intrigued by the mystery surrounding the celebrities and the exclusivity of Island Home hooked me immediately. The book switches between different perspectives as we learn how Island Home was developed and how the opening weekend ended in murder.
This could have been an intense mystery full of suspense, but too much was going on for me to stay hooked. I wanted to be invested in all the characters, however, they were indistinguishable to me and each had a lot of backstories. I couldn’t really divide my attention properly. While this book tries to hint at the corruption and dark secrets of the elite circles, it got lost with all the characters.
I really wanted to like this, but it couldn’t keep my interest. Conversely, I immediately went for Ellery Lloyd’s previous book, Someone Like Her, and I am enjoying it much more. It’s clear they can write a solid mystery, but The Club would have really benefitted from focusing on just one subplot to avoid confusion.
