Would Like to Meet | A New Romance and Decent Story
3.5/5 stars
Evie Summers has been assistant for seven years, a number she never wished she reached. Her latest task is to get a major client, Ezra, to finish his Hollywood rom-com script. To persuade him, she agrees to test out various meet-cutes and figure out just how well they work. Meanwhile, her new friends from the coffeeshop watch her attempt these. Annette is amused, but her single father Ben may have another opinion.
This was a newish type of romance that intrigued me in the beginning, but towards the end the pacing began to slow for me. Evie was a mostly likable character, but some of her actions were questionable and I wasn’t a big fan of how she treated her friends. Her commitment to work is the entire reason why she is in this situation and often doesn’t prioritize friends, but I expected better from an adult.
Though there are arguably two male leads contending for her heart, it was easy to see where the book was going. Because of that, I grew impatient waiting for the romance to develop. Evie remained unaware of characters’ true feelings about her for 95% of the book. The meet cutes she was going on took second place to the rest of the story. This would have been fine if the main romance was a bigger theme.
For a fiction this was good. I saw some character development and I did appreciate Evie’s dedication to doing well and her growing friendship with the girl, Annette. For a romance, I found it to be lacking even though there was dozens of opportunities for it.
