That Summer

3.75/5

Daisy seems to have it all in life, but there is something keeping her up at night. When she begins receiving emails meant for another woman, she grows curious of this mysterious Diana’s glamorous life. The two woman decide to meet up and Daisy realizes their meeting may not be a coincidence.

That Summer was an interesting read that was much deeper than I expected. In the wake of the Me Too Movement, this book encouraged more conversations about sexual assault and the “boys will be boys” mentality. I liked how it was set in the same universe as Big Summer and even referenced some of the characters.

The story was paced well and kept me interested by switching between timelines and points of view. The material was heavy and could be graphic which forced me to take breaks rather than speed-read like usual. Even with the intense material, I felt disconnected from the characters. It was hard for me to stay immersed in the book. Perhaps if I had known more about what the story would hold, I would have been more prepared. Overall, another solid read from Weiner, but it’s a story that would benefit from some content warnings.
