The Long Weekend

Jayne, Ruth, and Emily head to the secluded barn a day earlier than their husbands for a relaxing weekend away with friends. Edie is sitting this weekend out after the death of her husband. The women arrive at the barn only to find an ominous note telling them one of their husbands would be murdered. With a storm approaching, they are trapped without cell service and must determine if their secrets are finally going to be the end of them. 

This was an interesting read because the entire book had no chapters. Like with other psychological thrillers, this also switched between the perspectives of perpetrators and victims, but the only clue of the switch would be a new paragraph. This was a new style for me and I liked how it aided in the suspense and feeling of having unreliable narrators. 

The plot was a bit lackluster for me. There was a lot going on and it began to reach the point of unbelievably crazy. The resolution was clean but it did not match the energy from before. It was too clean and quick for what had happened previously. 

While the plot wasn’t my favorite, the writing style and choices kept the atmosphere full of suspense and thrill. It forced me to concentrate and stay immersed in that feeling of suspense. I think without some of the red herrings and more balanced resolution, this would have been a must-read thriller for me.
